OPEN BLOG CONTEST themed “Eradication of Poverty through Sustainable production and consumption”

Blog contest

Introduction

Agriculture Students Liaison Forum (ASLF) in collaboration with Tunza Eco Network, Nepal is with OPEN BLOG CONTEST on occasion of International Youth Day 2016 themed “ Eradication of Poverty by Sustainable production and consumption”.

Achieving economic growth and sustainable development requires that we urgently reduce our ecological footprint by changing the way we produce and consume goods and resources. Agriculture is the biggest user of water worldwide, and irrigation now claims close to 70 percent of all freshwater appropriated for human use.

The efficient management of our shared natural resources, and the way we dispose of toxic waste and pollutants, are important targets to achieve this goal. Encouraging industries, businesses and consumers to recycle and reduce waste is equally important, as is supporting developing countries to move towards more sustainable patterns of consumption by 2030.

A large share of the world population is still consuming far too little to meet even their basic needs. Halving per capita global food waste at the retailer and consumer levels is also important for creating more efficient production and supply chains. This can help with food security and shift us towards a more resource efficient economy.

Responsible production and consumption is one of 17 Global Goals that make up the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. An integrated approach is crucial for progress across the multiple goals.

Program Details:

Theme of Contest is “ Eradication of Poverty by Sustainable production and consumption”. It is also theme assigned by United Nations for this year International Youth Day 2016. So Participants should express their views within word limit of 1000. It focuses on the leading role of young people in ensuring poverty eradication and achieving sustainable development through sustainable consumption and production.

Sustainable consumption entails the use of products and services that meet the basic needs of communities while safeguarding the needs of future generations. The development and promotion of individual choices and actions that increase the eco-efficiency of consumption of all and minimize waste and pollution is critical to achieving equitable socioeconomic development.

Yet, many young men and women face barriers to certain green consumption choices. Those barriers to sustainable consumption choices include the high prices of goods and services and a lack of information about the available choices. By focusing on the social development dimensions of sustainable consumption and production, this year’s theme emphasizes a cross-sectoral approach to sustainability and the social, political, economic and environmental inter-linkages needed to achieve it.
